Beginning research scholars have much to learn before they can write effectively. You may make better progress if you follow these suggestions:
2. Proper lighting. Poor lighting increases eye fatigue. Ideal lighting is indirect and free from glare.
3. Proper ventilation. The brain needs fresh oxygen to function at its optimum.
4. Reasonable quietness. Try experimenting with a cool music in the background, and see if that increases your concentration and productivity.
5. A comfortable chair or a desk that will allow you to stand and work part of the time.
6. Set aside regular hours for writing and observe your schedule faithfully.
7. To overcome the difficulty of getting started at each writing session, stop writing early each day and spend a few minutes organizing materials and listing the things to the following day.
8. After working for a few days, set the draft aside and return later to read it critically.
9. Since items in a report do not have to be written in a consecutive order, compose a rough draft of a session whenever sufficient insight into the materials has been gained.
10. Concentrate on communicating information when writing. Do not let minor problems interrupt the flow of thought and block progress–skip over them and return later to find the proper word, devise a draft transition, check a fact or insert an illustration.
11. When bogged down in a particular paragraph or section of a report, reread the preceding materials and the outline to retain perspective.
12. Ask colleagues to read the report and point out any gaps, weaknesses, or ideas that are not clearly communicated.
14. Allot sufficient amounts of time for making unhurried, thorough revisions because revising a research report usually consumes many more hours than writing the original draft.
